Honored on a 2024 stamp, trailblazing first lady Betty Ford was born 107 years ago on April 8. As first lady, Mrs. Ford won widespread admiration for her candor and support for women’s rights. She courageously disclosed her battles with breast cancer and later with substance use disorder.

Unexpectedly becoming first lady in August 1974, the self-assured Mrs. Ford quickly introduced herself to the American public through interviews showing her humor and frankness about controversial issues.

Mrs. Ford fought openly for women’s rights, campaigning tirelessly for the Equal Rights Amendment. After a breast cancer diagnosis and mastectomy in September 1974, she publicly shared her experience of the then-taboo condition.

After leaving the White House, Mrs. Ford publicly acknowledged her substance use disorder, helping to destigmatize the disease. In 1982, the Betty Ford Center for substance dependency opened.

Betty Ford embraced the role of first lady, becoming one of the most politically outspoken first ladies since Eleanor Roosevelt — and helping mold the position’s modern role.
