The Postal Store®

Born and raised in Berkeley, California, Powwows stamp artist Mateo Romero is a Southern Keres Cochiti Pueblo tribal member who now lives in Pojoaque Pueblo, New Mexico.

Romero comes from a long line of ceramicists and painters, and his chosen profession was influenced by the artisans in his family who preceded him. His grandmother Teresita Romero was a polychrome revivalist ceramicist; his father, Santiago Romero, trained as a watercolorist at Dorothy Dunn’s painting program at the Santa Fe Indian School. Romero’s brother, Diego Romero, is also a renowned potter.

On April 25, 2025, join the U.S. Postal Service in celebrating the release of the Powwows: Celebrating Native American Culture stamps, featuring four different Native American dancers. The stamps are available for pre-order at usps.com/store.
