Did you know that April 22 was chosen for Earth Day because it fit college students’ busy schedules?

On April 22, 1970, America celebrated the first national Earth Day when Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson inspired thousands of people — mostly students on college campuses — to organize environmental teach-ins at universities, schools, and community centers around the country.

April 22 was chosen as the date because it falls between college spring break and finals, allowing students to lead the movement. All over the country, millions of people young and old joined together to rally against environmental destruction and pollution.

By April 22, 1990, Earth Day became a worldwide event, when hundreds of millions of people across the globe commemorated the 20th anniversary of the first Earth Day. Today — 55 years after its founding — it remains an important way for Americans and people around the world to celebrate our planet.
