About This Stamp
This stamp features a portrait of Adlai Stevenson, governor of Illinois and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Born in California in 1900, he later moved to Illinois with his family. He received his law degree from Northwestern University and practiced law in Chicago. He was elected governor of Illinois in 1948. He unsuccessfully ran for president during the 1952, 1956, and 1960 elections. President John F. Kennedy appointed Stevenson the United State Ambassador to the United Nations in 1961.
