Battle of the Wilderness

This Civil War Centennial issue stamp commemorates the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864 during the American Civil War. General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union Army waged a war of attrition against General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Both sides suffered heavy casualties and fighting was inconclusive.
