About This Stamp
A special $9.35 postage stamp for use principally on Express Mail Next Day Service was issued August 12, 1983, at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
The U.S. Postal Service's advertising agency, Young & Rubicam of New York City, designed the stamp. It featured the head of an American bald eagle illuminated by a full moon. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration photographed the view of the moon in 1972. Tom McHugh, a famous wildlife photographer, took the photograph of the eagle in 1975.
The $9.35 value met the postage rate for items weighing up to two pounds mailed via Express Mail Next Day Service. It was used for other mail services as well. To receive Express Mail Next Day Service, however, the stamp had to be used in combination with the necessary Express Mail label (Label llB), which was obtained free of charge at any of the more than 3,500 post offices which provided Express Mail Service.
The stamp was issued in booklet form and contained one pane of three $9.35 stamps. The stamp was printed in the gravure process. The modeler was Clarence Holbert.
