This John Foster Dulles Memorial stamp features a portrait of John Foster Dulles, Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Dulles established his international relations background, participating as legal counsel to the United States delegation at the Versailles Peace Conference following the end of World War I, as well as a serving as a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell, an international law firm, and attending the San Francisco Conference, which helped create the United Nations. He was an important figure during the Cold War, with an aggressive stance against communism; he threatened massive retaliation in order to contain Soviet expansion.
