About This Stamp
The 22-cent special stamp honoring Love was issued April 17, 1985, in Hollywood, California. The dedication ceremony was held on "The Love Boat" set at Warner Hollywood Studios.
The stamp's contemporary design incorporated vibrant shades of six colors — yellow, orange, red, green, blue, and purple — with the word "Love" written in bold, purple letters. It was the fourth issue celebrating the theme of Love. The first one, issued in 1973, proved so popular that the Postal Service issued subsequent Love stamps in 1982 and 1984.
The design of the 22-cent Love stamp was unveiled during a New Year's Eve celebration at the Old Post Office in Washington, D.C. This was the second consecutive unveiling of a Love stamp design at the Old Post Office to signal the arrival of a New Year in the nation's capital.
The stamp designer and typographer was Corita Kent of Boston, Massachusetts; art director was Howard Paine; modeler was Peter Cocci. The gravure process was used. The stamps were issued in panes of 50.
