About This Stamp
This Nevada Statehood stamp commemorates the 100th anniversary of Nevada’s admission into statehood. The United States first gained control of the region following the Mexican-American War. The Nevada Territory split from the Utah Territory in 1861. The territory obtained statehood in 1864. The stamp depicts a map of the state and an image of the mining camp Virginia City, with mountains in the background. The state experienced a period of growth following the discovery of silver at Comstock Lode.
