About This Stamp
This New York City stamp commemorates the 300th anniversary of settlement of the present-day area known as New York City. The Dutch established New Amsterdam, which became an important and popular trading post within the colony of New Netherland. The British seized the city in 1664 and renamed it New York after the Duke of York and future King of England, James II. After the American Revolution, New York served as capital of the United States from 1785–1790. This stamp features a Dutch ship in New Amsterdam.
