About This Stamp
A 22-cent Love stamp was issued January 30, 1986, in New York City. Jim Henson and Muppet character Rowlf The Dog hosted the ceremony. Jim Henson was the creator of the Muppets and the popular puppet characters of "Sesame Street."
Graphics artist Saul Mandel of Jericho, New York, captured the language of love in the vertically oriented postage stamp with his depiction of a cuddly looking puppy.
This is the fifth Love stamp the Postal Service has issued. The first Love stamp was issued in 1973 in Philadelphia. Its motif was a block letter representation of the work "Love" and was designed by contemporary artist Robert Indiana.
As with previous Love stamps, the 1986 issue was a special stamp, which means that it would be available in larger quantities and for a longer period of time than commemorative issues.
The stamps were printed in the photogravure process and issued in panes of 50.
