About This Stamp

The 17.5-cent Racing Car coil stamp went on sale September 25, 1987, in Indianapolis, Indiana. The stamp, designed by Tom Broad, features the 1911 Marmon "Wasp," the first car to win the Indianapolis 500 race. The stamp accommodated the growing number of mailers who prepare their mail to meet ZIP + 4 Presort requirements.

The stamp was engraved through the intaglio process by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The stamp was issued in coils of 100 (uncanceled), coils of 500, and coils of 3,000 (precanceled).
