About This Stamp
A 20-cent commemorative stamp calling attention to the contributions of science and industry to the growth and development of the United States was issued January 19, 1983, in Chicago, Illinois. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the Museum of Science and Industry.
The Museum of Science and Industry celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1983. Founded by merchant-philanthropist Julius Rosenwald in 1933, the museum is housed in the reconstructed Palace of Fine Arts for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, located in Jackson Park on Chicago's south side.
The stamp, designed by Saul Bass of Los Angeles, California, symbolizes the merger of industry and modern technology through superimposition of industrial images on a computer-like grid. The modeler was Ronald C. Sharpe.
The stamp was printed in the offset/intaglio process, with 50 stamps per pane.
