About This Stamp

This Shipbuilding stamp commemorates the 350th anniversary of the shipbuilding industry in America. The stamp features an illustration of the pinnace Virginia of Sagadahock, taken from an artist's conception of its appearance. The ship was completed in the Popham Colony, in what is now the state of Maine. The Virginia was the first English-built ship to be constructed in the English-colonized area of North America.
