About This Stamp
A 6-cent regular stamp honoring Walter Lippmann was issued in the Great Americans series on September 19, 1985, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The dedication ceremony was held in the Nicollet Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel during the national convention of the National Newspaper Association, which was celebrating its 100th anniversary.
Walter Lippmann was one of the most respected and influential political writers of his time. During his 60-year career, Lippmann wrote more than 20 books and thousands of newspaper columns on world affairs. He used his insights to educate, explain, and clarify ethical and political questions to a wide spectrum of readers, which included not only average citizens but also presidents, public officials, and business leaders.
The stamp was designed by Dennis Lyall of Norwalk, Connecticut. It was printed in the intaglio process and issued in panes of 100. The art director and typographer was Howard Paine, design coordinator, Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee; the modeler was Clarence Holbert, and the engravers were Robert G. Culin, Sr., (lettering & numerals) and Thomas Hipschen (vignette).
