About This Stamp
The Postal Service saluted the World University Games with the issuance of a 29-cent commemorative stamp on February 25, 1993, in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo was the site of the July 1993 World University Games and the first U.S. city to host the games.
The World University Games, the second largest international amateur athletic event in the world, originated in Paris in 1923 and are held every two years. The World University Games are often referred to as the "Universiade."
The stamp features silhouettes of five runners — one each in black, red, green, yellow, and blue — and the Buffalo Games' star logo in the same colors. Inscribed across the bottom are "World University Games" in black and "Buffalo '93" in red, with "USA 29" in red in the upper left corner.
Designed by Buffalo artist David Buck, the stamps were produced in panes of 50 in the photogravure process by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
