Dale Stephanos

Patrick Henry

Starting with graphite sketches, Dale Stephanos refined his composition on tracing paper before bringing it to life on gessoed Masonite.

Marquis de Lafayette

For this portrait, Dale Stephanos used acrylics and gouache to establish shapes and values before applying the final layers of oil paint on gessoed Masonite.

A full-time professional illustrator for more than 30 years, Dale Stephanos has created art for Rolling Stone, TIME, Sports Illustrated, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and the Village Voice, among others. His work has been honored by the Society of Illustrators, Illustrators West, American Illustration, Communication Arts, and Lürzer’s Archive’s 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide. In 2017, he opened his own gallery in Boston, and he teaches at both Suffolk University and Lyme Academy College of Fine Art.

For this project, Stephanos painted Patrick Henry and the Marquis de Lafayette. “I loved working on these portraits,” he says. “I felt as though I was making a lasting contribution. Hopefully, 250 years from now, when Americans celebrate our half-millennium, an artist will look at these portraits and feel the same pride we felt creating them.”
