Marc Burckhardt
Using a modified Flemish technique, Marc Burckhardt began with an acrylic underpainting and layered oil on top to develop color, depth, and detail.
Marc Burckhardt applied a modified Flemish technique to create this image, which consists of an acrylic underpainting topped with layers of oil on panel.
“It was a tremendous honor to paint portraits of Thaddeus Kosciuszko and Baron von Steuben,” Marc Burckhardt says. “Both men represent the spirit that makes this nation unique: immigrants committed to principles they were willing to fight for.”
For Burckhardt, von Steuben held particular meaning. Born in Germany to an American mother and German father, he shares a dual heritage that deepened his connection to the Prussian military officer. A former instructor at the School of Visual Arts and Texas State University, Burckhardt was named Texas State Artist by the Texas Legislature and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
His honors include the Hamilton King Award, Gold and Silver Medals from the Society of Illustrators, a Cannes Lion, and a Grammy. His work has been commissioned by Gucci, Porsche, Amazon, TIME, Rolling Stone, the New York Times, and Random House, and exhibited internationally.
